Is my Chihuahua overweight?

The scale can't answer this: two 6-pound Chihuahuas can be one lean dog and one overweight dog. Vets use their hands and eyes, on a 1-to-9 scale. This test walks you through it in four questions and tells you how much is extra, if any.

1. Run your hand over the ribs with light pressure
2. Look at him from above, standing
3. Look at him from the side
4. Feel the base of the tail and the spine

Visual guide: underweight, ideal and overweight

Look at yours from above and from the side and compare with the three outlines. On a smooth-coat Chihuahua it's obvious; on a long coat, trust your hands.

Underweight1 to 3 points

From above

From the side

Ribs, hips and spine visible. Extreme waist, sharply tucked belly.

Ideal4 to 5 points

From above

From the side

Ribs felt without pressing and not seen. Clear waist from above. Belly rises toward the back.

Overweight6 to 9 points

From above

From the side

You press to find ribs. Tube-shaped from above. Belly runs straight or sags.

How much is extra? The scale point by point

Each point above 5 is roughly 10-15% over ideal weight. On a 6.5-pound dog, a single point is 10 to 15 ounces: the weight of a stick of butter.

How do I get my Chihuahua to lose weight?

Slowly, by measuring, and without skipping meals. In a 5-pound dog, a crash diet risks hypoglycemia and losing muscle instead of fat. The goal is 1 to 2% of body weight per week: 1 to 2 ounces on a 6.5-pound Chihuahua.

  1. Weigh him today and write it down. Kitchen scale, before a meal. It's the only number that will tell you whether it's working.
  2. Work out his ration and cut 10%. Feed for the target weight, not the current one, and measure in grams, not cups.
  3. Treats come out of the ration, not on top of it. A Chihuahua's budget is about 180 calories a day; one biscuit is 30. Swap treats for carrot, cucumber or a few pieces of his own kibble.
  4. Two meals a day, never free-feeding. And nobody else in the house "gives him a little." That's the number-one reason diets fail.
  5. Ten more minutes of walking. Not running: sniffing, which tires him just as much and doesn't load the knees.
  6. Weigh him every two weeks. If he isn't losing, cut another 10%. If he's losing more than 2% a week, add a little back.

If he's over 8, neutered or on medication, talk to your vet first: prescription weight-loss diets make this a lot easier.

Weighing a Chihuahua on a bathroom scale is guessing: it won't show the 2 ounces that matter. This one has a hold function for dogs that won't sit still and enough precision to see a 1-ounce difference between one fortnight and the next, which is exactly what you need to know whether the diet is working.

Ojo:Not essential: a kitchen scale that goes to 11 pounds does the same job with a puppy or an adult who'll sit in a bowl. And it isn't sold in Spain and is often out of stock in Mexico, so the link goes to a search there.

Why does it matter so much in a Chihuahua?

Because 11 extra ounces on a 5.5-pound dog is 12% overweight. On a person that would be 20 pounds. And that 12% lands on the breed's most fragile parts:

  • ·Knees. Luxating patella is the Chihuahua's most common orthopedic problem, and weight makes it worse and earlier.
  • ·Windpipe. Fat around the neck aggravates tracheal collapse: more coughing, less air.
  • ·Heart. Mitral valve disease arrives sooner and progresses faster with extra weight.
  • ·Pancreas and blood sugar. Pancreatitis and diabetes are far more common in overweight dogs.
  • ·Years of life. Dogs kept lean for life lived almost two years longer than their littermates in the most-cited canine longevity study. We cover it in how long Chihuahuas live.

What if the test says he's underweight?

It's less common, but it happens, and in a Chihuahua it's serious: with no fat reserve, a day without eating is hypoglycemia. If ribs and hips show even though he eats, vet first, because the usual causes are parasites, painful teeth or an underlying illness, not the ration.

Once that's ruled out, 10% more food split into three meals and a recheck in two weeks. And if the problem is that he won't eat, that's a different issue: Chihuahua not eating.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my Chihuahua is overweight?+
With your hands and eyes, not the scale: run your hand over the ribs with light pressure (you should feel each one without seeing them), look from above (he should narrow behind the ribs) and from the side (the belly should rise toward the back legs). If you have to press to find ribs, he's tube-shaped or the belly sags, he's overweight.
How much should a Chihuahua weigh to not be overweight?+
There's no single number: a large-framed Chihuahua can weigh 9 pounds and be lean, and a small-framed one weigh 5.5 and be overweight. The usual range is 3.3 to 8 pounds, but what defines overweight is body condition, not the scale.
What happens if my Chihuahua is overweight?+
It loads the knees (luxating patella is the breed's most common injury), worsens tracheal collapse, brings heart disease forward and raises the risk of diabetes and pancreatitis. And he lives less: dogs kept lean lived almost two years longer in the most-cited canine longevity study.
How do I get my Chihuahua to lose weight?+
Measured meals on a kitchen scale, 10% less than he eats today, treats subtracted from that ration (or swapped for carrot and cucumber), two meals a day and slightly longer walks. Goal: lose 1 to 2% of body weight per week, no more. Weigh him every two weeks.
How long does it take a Chihuahua to lose weight?+
At a safe 1-2% a week, a 6.5-pound Chihuahua carrying 14 extra ounces takes 7 to 12 weeks. Faster than that risks hypoglycemia and losing muscle instead of fat.
Is my Chihuahua too thin or is that just the breed?+
If you can see the ribs and hip bones from across the room, he's underweight, even if he eats. It can be parasites, painful teeth, or simply too little food for an active dog. Vet first; then 10% more food and a recheck in two weeks.
