What size sweater does a Chihuahua wear?

For clothing, chest and back length both count. This is the most common mapping in small-dog brands; each runs a little differently, so always check the listing's own chart.

How do you measure a Chihuahua?

  1. Use a soft sewing tape. No tape? A piece of string you then measure with a ruler.
  2. Have him standing, not sitting or lying: sitting adds nearly an inch to the chest.
  3. Chest: the widest point, right behind the front legs. Snug, not tight.
  4. Neck: at the base, where the harness will rest, not up behind the ears.
  5. Back: from the withers (where the neck ends) to the base of the tail.
  6. Measure twice and go with the larger number.

If my Chihuahua is between sizes, do I go smaller or bigger?+
Bigger, for both harnesses and clothing. It's the manufacturers' own advice. A harness can be cinched with its straps; a small one can't be let out, and it pinches exactly where it shouldn't.
How do I know the harness fits?+
Two fingers should slide between the harness and the body, no more and no less. More room and he can back out; less and it rubs. The pressure must sit on the chest, never the neck.
